Thread: AMD's 3870 Quad Crossfire?

    AMD's 3870 Quad Crossfire?

Anybody take a look at the front page of H? There is a pic of 4 AMD cards in crossfire mode. This looks pretty cool but the more I think about it the more this seems entirely insane. You would have to be super rich to first of all buy the system and secondly to have all those cards be outdated in 6month to a year. Not to mention the power consumption.

Hell I can barely afford one good Video card let alone Crossfire let alone Quad Crossfire. Am I alone here?:?

That looks pretty neat despite its non-cost-effectiveness. I think that I would use more than a 750 watt psu, though. Did anyone catch if all of those run at x16 speeds?

S.o.a.B. I be those cards just fly like wild banishes in solitaire.

Its super cool if you have a bragging contest, but what worries me is this going to be the norm to play games?

    ugh hopefully, not :S

that means I'd stop playing the new games (I don't really like spending too much on my PC; everything gets outdated in a matter of weeks...)

    AMD's 3870 Quad Crossfire?

Couple of points on this that will sweeten the pot:

    1) The cards consume less electricity than the 2900 "space heaters"... much less.
    2) They cost less than the compariable performance 8800GT by about $70
    3) AMD did something that NVidia unfortunately never quite figured out, how to run cards in SLI *and* at the same time allow for people too hook up multiple moinitors *without* needing to change driver settings. Running 4 cards, at 2 monitors each = 8 monitors... *that you can game on*
    4) per card over clocking.
You can do Crossfire configs with 2, or *3*, or *4* cards.

Now that yo uare all wet with desire, my MAJOR concern is airflow. Look at how close those cards are to each other. Plus, you will be pulling heat off of the card below you. Add in to that the shrouds dont go all the way to the end, meaning that your exhausted hot air, some of it is going to kick back into the case, or in this example, it will kick onto another card. Also, with 4 cards, there is no space for that wonderful X-Fi soundcard...

Thanks for the info, tech-daddy; it always helps to have someone around who knows what they're talking about . You're right about their proximity, water cooling is definitely a must.
