    cant decide on a card

I'm looking for a graphics card between $100-$175 that should be able to last me a while without having to upgrade I was debating on getting this graphics card because it seems worth it both cost and performance wise.

But i want to get some feedback and such before I decide

    cant decide on a card

    I have 8600GT 256Mb with DDR3 ram

I can have everything on max on call of duty 4 (as far as I can set it) and it still works like a charm
only starts lagging a little when in really deep fog - when you throw the smokescreen to the tank so you can plant C4 on it

    P.S.

one thing i will say...dont get the 512mb version of the 8600gt, get the 256mb as the 256mb use gddr3 wheres the 512mb uses ddr sumit....and well the 256mb version will deliver better with games then the 512mb version. hope dis helps ya mate

This is kind of a blanket statement. You need to be more specific on the cards.

There are multiple versions of the card with multiple clock speeds. It is very possible for a 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 card to out perform a 8600GT 512MB GDDR2, but I wouldn't boldly state it's going to do it across the board. The extra memory will come in handy at some point. Plus there is also a 512MB GDDR3 version of the card as well.

I would personally look at the 8600GTS or wait a little longer and save a little more $ and go for a 8800GT or the new 8800GTS 512MB.

Well Vram size on matters past 256mb if your going to be running things at a very large resolution. Think of Vram as a chalkboard that your card paints the screens picture on. If your trying to paint a picture bigger than the board... the quality goes down. GDDR3 > All the others, also something to look for is bit rate. Sadly the 8600's only have 128bit but as you go up in GPU's most will have 256bit and more so keep an eye out for that if you buy above 8600.

Edit: Just noticed the thread about 4 months old xD

i would spend $20 over your budget and get an 8800gt. it will last longer and give you better results.

Depending on where you live and how the prices are, either the 8800GT or the 9600GT. The 8800GT has hit $130 here, and the 9600GT usually goes for $110-120. Personally, I would go with the 8800GT.
