HR-11 VGA Backside Cooler

Sponsor: Thermalright

Price: 31.99 @ FrozenCPU

Author: Tazz

Published: Tue, Nov-06-2007

 Description:

     Today we are going to take a look at a unique VGA cooler design that supplements your existing cooling. In early July Thermalright announced their new cooler dubbed the HR-11 VGA Backside Cooler. The HR-11 has dual heatpipes and a large surface area to offer additional cooling, with minimal effort required for installation. The HR-11 will even work in a SLI / CrossFire condition on todays latest cards.

 First Impression:

      With todays cards pumping out vast amounts of heat Thermalright has taken VGA cooling to the next step. Back in July Thermalright announced a new product to their line up, The HR-11 VGA backside cooler. The HR-11 supports numerous card including the ATI HD2900 series and nVidia's 8800 series cards. It utilizes dual heat-pipes and 80mm of fins with proprietary mounting holes. It does not matter if you're mounting the HR-11 with a stock cooler or an after market cooler. There is also the possibility of adding a 80mm fan to the cooler for maximum performance.

     The Thermalright HR-11 comes packed in a fairly large brown box that only shows the Thermalright logo. It's kind of plain, but It gets the job done. It seems Thermalright might be more interested in the bang for your buck rather than spending extra dollars on a graphically detailed package. Then again they could also have retail boxes that they only use to send to the retail market.

     The HR-11 is completely packed in a foam padding. The box would have to be totally crushed for the cooler to receive any damage in shipment. There are a total of three pieces of foam used, one is on top and there are two sections that hold the HR-11 in the center of the box. Removing the HR-11 from its protective bag might be the toughest part of the installation process.  So keep that in mind when you're removing the bag, the aluminum fins can bend easily.

     Looking at the instruction manual you will see that the installation of the HR-11 VGA cooler(s) are going to be relatively simple to do. It's still a good idea to read through the instructions once just to make sure you're familiar with the process.

     Once you remove the cooler from the foam. You will get a better look at it. The bag over it is relatively snug, so take care when removing it.

     Located in a pocket of the foam you will find a bag of 8 screws. These are your only mounting accessories. You will use four of them depending on which card you're mounting the HR-11 cooler on.

Features:

    * Cools GPU additionally from the back of VGA. Compatible with stock cooling, HR-03 series, and V2
    * Passively cooled heatsink design for no-noise operation Fan
    * Proprietary through holes on fins for efficient ventilation
    * Soldered fins to copper base (nickel plated) to make effective contact
    * Light weight and easy installation

Technical Spec:

    * Dimension: L124.5 x W98 x H104 (mm)
    * Weight: 150g (heatsink only)
