Introduction

Not to long ago Sapphire introduced their newest cards, the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD3850 and HD3870. Today we are going to take a look at the HD3870. Several games have been recently released and/or are about to be released that will bring any video card not ready for the challenge to its knees. The HD3870 offers several great features such as  512MB of GDDR4 memory, HDMI support, DirectX 10 support, HD support, and Crossfire X support to name a few.

First Impression

The Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3870 comes very well placed in a graphical display box that shows a female character. The front and rear of the box shows off the features and highlights that the Sapphire HD 3870 has to offer.

Upon opening the box, the user is greeted with a sticker on the anti-static bag stating that the card does require a power connection from the power supply. I wonder if a lot of users have returned cards in the past because they failed to connect their video card to the power supply? I could see it happening for someone that doesn't stay up on the current hardware.

Pulling all the goods out of the box first we will find the manual and all the accessories individually bagged. Starting from the left to the right and top to bottom. What you get is an S-video (7-Pin) to RCA adapter harness, VGA to DVI adapter, DVI to HDMI adapter, Molex to 6-Pin PCI-E adapter harness, 9-Pin to RCA adapter (small yellow), and the Crossfire bridge.

Like with most of Sapphires cards, you will get a few select softwares with the card. The HD3870 came with PowerDVD, DVD Suite, 3D Mark06, and a brochure for Valve's Black Box set. The last disc is the Sapphire Installation CD.

Quote from Sapphire's site:

Unshackle your PC's performance from the coin in your pocket as the SAPPHIRE HD 3870 liberates your inner gamer without compromising your wallet. Hard pressed to find a comparable product on the market for the price, the SAPPHIRE HD 3870 extinguishes all doubt that the Radeon HD 3870 core is a mid-range performing product. With features such as: DirectX® 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1 support, integrated HDMI and HDCP support for Blu-ray™/HD DVD decoding and for the extreme enthusiast, CrossFire X™ support, the SAPPHIRE incarnation of the HD 3870 will own your imagination and accelerate your performance on the virtual battlefield of your desktop! Reinvent the way you engage your gaming experience with every LOAD!
